Snake by D.H.Lawrence

Can you please help me?

The following are the lines from the poem 'Snake' written by D.H.Lawrence.

And I wished he would come back, my snake.

For he seemed to me again like a king,

Like a king in exile, uncrowned in the underworld,

Now due to be crowned again.

and so, I missed my chance with one of the lords

Of life.

Can you please explain to me these lines and why the snake was considered to be a king and later a lord?

Why is the poet calling the snake "lord"?

hi shylesh...

The poet is calling the snake as lord because snake is venomous and he has the ability to kill anyone and only the lord of life i.e. *** has the ability to do so. So the snake has been referred to as lord of life.

Hello,I was having the same doubt of the above and thanks for clearing it.Can you please clear this DOUBT : Why does the poet call the snake as uncrowned king in the underworld ?

It is very simple. The snake though in many respects is the lord and the king, does not have a crown on his head. And the underworld, the pits and holes on earth is the hiding place of snakes and thus their kingdom where they are their own kings.

Ya, I agree with others interpretation. One more thought I have, the snake was called uncrowded king because others scared to do that in its underground world. The poet came over his fear at last so wished to crown it.

He wished that it should come back because he had thrown a piece of wood over the snake.it seemed to be king in exile because sometime a king is banished from his kingdom and due to its venegance he came again .in the same way a snake due to human activities the snake is needed from his habitat .and one day he meet his family and be crownd again.

Hi

It's a great poem. DHL finds a snake and believes that he should kill it because it is venomous. He makes a clumsy attempt to do so, which fails. The poet then asks why. Is it because he is scared of the snake?

My understanding is that he fails to kill the snake because he has respect for it. Somewhere in the poet's mind is the thought that the snake should live because it i
