'snake' and 'serpent'

Hi, would someone please tell me the difference between 'snake' and 'serpent'?

And by the way, my dictionary translates 'python' to 'snake' too. Is this true and what's the difference?

In the sense that a snake is an animal of which there are many species (eg., python, cobra) the serpent is a non-existant mythical beast.
To the best of my knowledge, no one has ever succeeded in capturing a serpent (or even a bigfoot).
Now space aliens are another matter.
