A woman received a note from Baxter:

Next morning, as the school assembled, Baxter brought a

note: ‘Just to let you know that Ethel is safe and sound with

Miss Bedfellow. Heard five minutes ago.’

Then the narrator wrote:

Like everything else, it was smooth and plausible.

Unlike many other things, it was susceptible to proof.

Does it mean that like everything else this news was credible and ... (what does "smooth" mean here?)

However it was possible to prove whether this news was true or not? Right?

Like everything else, it was smooth and plausible. Does it mean that like everything else this news was credible and ... what does "smooth" mean here?-- internally consistent.

Unlike many other things, it was susceptible to proof. However it was possible to prove whether this news was true or not? Right?- Right.
