Vocabulary

smoking of our generation

Sitting has been the smoking of our generation.
Why is there nothing to do with smoking in this sentence? The translation says it means " the disease of the times". Is it a paraphrase or that there is exactly such a expression?

Top answer

The translator has the right idea, except for this point. Smoking and sitting are not diseases. They are activities that have a negative impact on one's health.
