Smoke up

Hi,

My mom built a fire in the wood stove, but she did it the wrong way and the living room smelled of smoke. It was nothing serious though. Could I use the word 'smoke up' or is it too strong? Only a small puff of smoke came out.

"I knew that if I didn't put the log of wood in sooner, I'd smoke up the living room."

Thank you.

Too strong. What you have is fine.

The grammar is correct, but the statement is counterintuitive as I read it. Adding more wood
