What's the difference between a smile and a grin or to smile and to grin ?

smile strikes me as natural and friendly. grin is more exaggerated and can take on any of several different aspects, some of which are definitely not friendly: an evil grin, a grin of embarrassment, a sheepish grin, a dopey
