Smells good/well tastes sweet/good/well

Hello.


I found the expression smells good in my book Murphy English Grammar in Use. Why do native speakers use good instead of well and would tastes sweet/good/well be also correct?

Consider these simple examples.

My dog smells good. This means I like the odour that is coming from my dog. 'good' is an adjective describing 'my dog'.

My dog smells well. This means that my dog has a good sense of smell.'well' is an adverb modifying the verb 'smells'.
