Smells!!

Hi
I have a question about these sentences:
It smells.
It smells bad.

I have learnt that 'bad' is unnecessary here. Is it so? If yes, then can't we say:
It smells sweet.

Hello I am an English learner come from Hong Kong and would like to give some opinions.

First of all, the word "smell" can be a adjective and it means bad smell. Therefore the meaning of "It smells." and "It smells bad." is same and the word "bad" is as unnecessary as you mentioned. Totally they have different meanings(I think only and please point out the mistake if wrong.) if you are

In general, "It smells." is a negative statement.
It smells bad is not incorrect, neither is "It smells sweet." Nor, "It smells like roses here."
