Smell or smelling

I don´t know exactly the differences between smelling and smell. Can anybody explain it to me please?

I know that smelling is the gerund of smell but my question is that smell and smelling are also nouns and that is my doubt. For example

Should I use Smell/smelling in the following sentences?

*The smoke smelling/smell affects me

*The best of that flower is its smelling/smell
