Smallville

Hello!

In the new episode of Smallville Lois and Clark are talking about their relationship
and Lois says:

Why don't we just table this whole, "office thrown together in the trenches sparks"
thing, okay? Back to basics. Keep the game on the field.

I can't figure out what did she mean by "office thrown together in the trenches sparks"
I guess, basically she wanted to put their relationship on hold, am I right?

What does "trench sparks" mean?

And what did she mean by "keep the game on the field"? What game?

Thank you!

People who are "in the trenches" together must work together in a tough situation. It comes from fighting in a war, but now people talk about being in the trenches as a metaphor.

It's not uncommon for people who are in the trenches together to quickly form a strong bond.

They use the word "office" to show that they work together in the office, facing tough situations together.

Table here means to put an end to all that, right?
And Back to basics. Keep the game on the field. means let's get things back they were
and save the sparks for the reporting, right?

Pretty much. Let's make sure our energies are limited to our work and not our relationship.

"Why don't we just table this whole..."
The meaning of "table" in this context is from parliamentary rules. Lois is, indeed, saying that she wants to put an end to the non-work relationship.

Interestingly, in some contexts "table" used like this can mean the exact opposite, that is to bring
