Small question

My character worked for certain companies in the past. He doesn't anymore.

Should I write:
a) He had work for...
b) He had worked for...

Same situation, different example. He tried to push further into his work domain. Should I say :
a) He had tried to reach further
b) He had try to reach further

I'd like the rules/tenses explained. Thanks !
