Slowpokes

I know the word means someone move slowly.

e.g. Many motorists are tired of getting stuck behind a slowpoke in the left lane doing 10 mph under the speed limit.

But could you tell me where does the word originate from?
Thanks before hand.

One meaning of "poke" is to dawdle or move slowly, a "poke" came to mean a laggard. No one knows where that came from. A slowpoke would be a particularly slow mover.

  • The term dates from the mid 1800s along with a peculiarly British version, "slowcoach," so perhaps "slowpoke" is a corruption.
