Slips a bit in third...

A carjacker says to one of his victims: Did you know your transmission
slips a bit in third? Goes to neutral position when shifted into third gear?

Top answer

To say a transmission "slips" means the clutch does not engage all the way at first, so the car moves sluggishly for a few seconds till the clutch gets into place and then the car drives normally. The car does not actually go into neutral, but it feels like it's in neutral for a brief period.

Your discussions seem to refer to a manual transmission. But it seems unusual that a clutch would slip in only one gear, especially third.

I'd suspect the excerpt refers to an automatic. Of course they have clutches too, but "going into neutral" would be quite another situation.
