Slipped free

Hi,
I would like to know what exactly means "slipped free" in this sentence from "Snow falling on cedars":

" Ishmael slipped three centre pages of Seaman Milholland's notes free and folded them ..."

I guess the signification here, but I want to be sure that it's "slip free" the verb who "works" the sentence.

It means the same as but 'slip free' in this case could convey that it was done in a surreptitious manner or that it was done very smoothly.

Yes, or it may indicate the way that the notebook is bound-- some sort of looseleaf binder, perhaps.
