slip

HELLO!
There is a sentence:
The movie, Crash, ____ into the theaters in May 2005, and quietly became both a hit and a critical success.
(slipped/put)
the answer is SLIPPED, what does it mean? And why cannot it be PUT?

Hi - Those are terrible choices for an answer to a horrible question. Movies don't "slip" into theaters and they are not "put" into them either (within the context of the question). There also seems to be a verb missing.
