Slightest excuse

There was not the slightest excuse for it.

Does the sentence mean; I had to do this for I was helpless to do this?

Top answer

It was an action that should not have been carried out; no excuse can be given which would explain why it should have happened. For example, assaulting a child is a bad action and no matter what the excuse you give, your action will still be wrong.
