slices of tomato or whole tomatoes

Hi,

Please tell me if the underlined word 'tomatoes' means whole tomatoes or sliced tomatoes. I think it is appropriate and logical to assume we are talking about slices, rather than whole tomatoes, when we are talking about what is on pizza.
