Sliced bacon - it or they?

Hello,

I'm not sure which form - signular or plurar - should I use in this sentence:

"The cook sliced the bacon and fried it/them for about 5 minutes."

I'm considering "them", because we are talking about slices of bacon. Could you, please, tell me what's the proper way of saying it?

Thank you
