Sleep silently

They sleep silently.

I saw the above at

It's about "what is a main verb.?"

A main verb has three potential functions:

1 To express an action :

He raced downstairs to the kitchen

2 to express a state

They sleep silently

3 to link a subject with its complement

I was lonely

I don't get the second example :

They sleep silently.

How does the above express a state if we consider the verb "sleep" as an action type?

I know the rules about but is there a tip or clue to differentiate a state from an action?

In the dictionaries, state and conditions are used interchangeably so there are no simple definitions.
