Sleep is a Noun or Verb.

Asleep is an Adjective or Adverb.

-->I am sleeping = I am asleep

In terms of how we use them is that different grammatical rules are going to apply depending on whether we are using a Noun,Verb,Adjective or Adverb.

With your two sentences,i can say that both of them are fine,but i think the first one should be:''Are you

"Are you asleep" and "are you sleeping" are synonymous.

Be aware that if the person is sleeping, of course, there will be no response until the person wakes up.
