Sledge/sled

Hi,

I'm aware that 'sledge' is mainly used in the UK while 'sled' is common across the US, but some people still argue about their use.

I was just wondering which one I should stick to. It seems to me that some British people also choose the word 'sled' when talking about the device that is used for sliding down a slope in winter.

Which one should I go for?

1) We decided to go sled riding.

2) We decided to go sledding.

3) We decided to go sledging.

Thank you!

I suppose it would depend on your audience. There is more ‘sledding’ done outside of Britain, I would assume. In Canada we call it ‘tobogganing’.

  • However, since a toboggan is a type of sled, we could call it sledding.
  • In Montana ‘sled riding’ is very popular.
