Slapdash

Hi everyone. well, I know exactly what the word means but why, how "slap" and "dash" together becomes "carelessly"? knowing the meanings of both words individually it doesn't make sense to me. thank you.

Top answer

Dating from the late 1600s, slapdash is not a new word. Slap is a very fast forceful reaction, and so is " dash " which adds the tone of suddenness and force. Something that is done very quickly and forcefully without thought is unthinking and careless.
