Slam dunk for the big one

Hi

Two guys are talking to each other. One of them is a former soldier the other one an agent.

The agent says: You earned that medal in the past. Why didn't you get it?

Former soldier replies: How did you find out about that?

Agent: Did some digging. You were a slam dunk for the big one.

Soldier: Every soldier in my company would have done the same for me.

Agent: It's not true and you know it. I was over there too. All soldiers are not created equal. So why didn't you get it?

What does that phrase mean?

I'm also not quite sure yet what the following sentence means, but maybe it's got something to do with that previous phrase?

The agent is saying that the soldier would have easily qualified for "the big one", which is probably a reference to the Medal of Honor (assuming the soldier is from the U.S.), the highest honor given to soldiers.

A slam dunk is a term from basketball. It happens when a player gets the ball and completely overpowers the opponents to make the shot. Slam dunk = an obvious score. In this case, it means that no one would argue that you deserved the highest medal of honor ("the big one"). The soldier answers - no, anyone would have done the same thing.

Hi

I see. So he says you were a shoo-in for the Medal of Honor (yes, American soldier)

And the soldier replies that it's nothing special because every soldier from his company would have done the same for him what he had done for them, however the agent says that not all soldiers are the same and he talks BS.

cheers
