Skipper
British movie, 1960. The CID detectives of Scotland Yard and the constables are using the word "skipper" all the time.
I would like to know if "skipper" is a first name, an alias or an affectionate nickname used for English constables when talking to another cop or to a superior. There are not masters of ships or coaches in the movie (two more meanings of skipper, I guess).
I've found this in urban dictionary:
"Skipper is one of mafia slang meaning captain or caporegime who headed crew in mafia family."
My problem is that in this movie there are not the gangsters but the police officers who use this word. Moreover, there's no character listed in the cast by the name of "Skipper".

John (broadcasting): The automatic alarm went off at Bolton Jewelers. Possible suspect on premises.
(The patrol car arrives at Bolton Jewelers. Brad, a CID detective, looks through the window.)
Brad: No sign of anything inside, skipper.
John: Call the station.
Night watchman: What's the trouble?
Tony: We are police officers, your alarm went off at the Yard.
Night watchman: There's nothing wrong here,
Tony: Fred, check the cellar.
Fred: All right, skipper.
(Fred checks the cellar and comes back)
Fred: All clear at the back, skipper.
