Skip the signal ...

Hi

He had a shortwave radio set up in his basement, which he used at certain times of day when he could skip the signal over the oceans and get more distance out of it.

--- Does it simply mean that he used the radio to send the signal over the ocean and talk to someone?

Top answer

Yes, but it involves some physical law or effect with which I am unfamiliar: the signal evidently travels farther over the ocean under certain conditions.
