Skip or pass

Hello Emotion: smile I would like to ask if it is possible to use "pass" with the meaning of "skip". For example, when somebody is having a dinner and decides not to eat a dessert - can he say "No, thanks, I will pass"? I heard somebody using it (this sentence exactly) and he wanted to tell he will skip this course/won't eat it. Is it ok to say it like this? Thank you!
