Six of us

Hi. I am in a company of five other people. I say:
"Well, there are six of us, so we will need two taxis."
OR
"Well, there are the six of us, so we will need two taxis."

I think both are correct, but "the six of us" is more emphatic. Is that right?

Top answer

I wouldn't say it is more emphatic. I'd say it suggests that the listener already knows there are six. Clive

Thank you, Sir. But can I say "Well, there are six of us.." as well?

AndyOrbanWell, there are the six of us, so we will need two taxis.
It's rather unusual to use a definite expression in a "there"-construction, but not wrong.

I see no need for "the" in this sentence.
