sitting keeping legs broadly

Three guys were sitting on a table, where four people can sit, keeping their legs broadly. So I asked them to move aside so that I can also sit.

Please correct my sentence.

I can't think of a genteel way to say it. I suppose it would be "with their legs spread," "OR "with their legs apart."

If you're going to use simple past for "asked," you should probably say, "so that I might / could sit also." (or, "also sit.")

People usually sit on chairs rather than on tables.
