sitting

Hello, I would like to ask you about the following sentence.
I was sitting there before I left. Why is the past continuous used here? Is it necessary to use it or can we just use the past simple? I sat there before I left. What is the difference between these two sentences? Thank you very much

The past simple is possible. In this particular sentence, there is not a great deal of difference in meaning, in my opinion.
