Sit in on someone

We spent a lot of time going around to mental health clinics and sitting in on professional communicators.

Hello, what does "sit in on someone" mean? I just found an explanation for sit in on something, but not "on people". Thanks!

sit in (on something)

to attend something as a visitor; to act as a temporary participant in something. Do you mind if I sit in on yourdiscussion? Please do sit in.

It is not usual to "sit in on" a person. I suppose it must mean to attend their meetings/discussions/etc. as a visitor.
