Sit In On a Meeting

I've known this phrasal verb from this expression, " You'll have to sit in on all of the meetings with them.". I guess "sit in on a meeting" means to attend a meeting, right? With the preposition "in" I kind of imagine someone coming in a door with a lot of people already in there waiting for a meeting to begin, but I don't imagine anything with the preposition "on". Please help.
