Sit in a class vs sit in on a class

Hello! I wonder what is the difference between "sit in" and "sit in on" .
a) He was sitting in a sociology class, listening to other students engaged in a discussion.,
b) He began by sitting in on an sociology class.
I wonder if both of the two expression interchangeable;

c) He was sitting in on a sociology class.
d) He began by sitting in an sociology class.
