Sit idly by/sit idle

Hi,

I know what ‘sit idly by’ means but I also came across ‘sit idle’.

Can I use it in this example?

“I dropped out of school but I didn’t sit idle. I enrolled for some private courses and I got a part-time job.”

Thank you.

This is understandable but strange, from a British perspective. I would use on instead.
