I know what ‘sit idly by’ means but I also came across ‘sit idle’.
Can I use it in this example?
“I dropped out of school but I didn’t sit idle. I enrolled for some private courses and I got a part-time job.”

This is understandable but strange, from a British perspective. I would use on instead.
