Sister-in-law

Hi,

If my mother remarries, and the new husband has a daughter, is she my sister-in-law? If he also has a sister, would she also be my sister-in-law?

Thank you for your help
H.

No. The new husband's daughter would be your stepsister (which I would write "step-sister", but the unhyphenated form apparently is more common, which surprises me slightly). The new husband's sister would, I think, be your step-aunt, though this is not a very commonly heard term.

My sister-in-law can be my spouse's sister or my brother's wife.
My brother-in law can be my spouse's brother or my sister's husband.

So the relatives of my mother's new husband are not my in-laws. Would you call them step-relatives?

Some people do use the term "step-relatives". It makes sense to me, and I find it acceptable.
