Singular/Plural

Like ants, termites have an elaborate social structure in which a few individuals reproduce and the rest serve the colony.

Guys,

Firstly, why do we have a few individuals? Secondly..why the rest serve the colony not serves? Sentence implies the rest of individuals... rest is singular..So should it not be a singular verb?
