Singular/Plural

All the characters are a miniature calligraphic composition inside their own square frame.

Does it mean for one character there is one composition or....is it single composition for all the character. Furthermore, when I change composition to plural as below- it sounds like one character has more than two composition...Perhaps I am missing sth..Please help me..
