Singular vs. plural grammar help?

Can someone please tell me which of these is correct? Are they both correct or is one incorrect? I'm thinking that one is possible the British preference and one is the American?

If I had to select one of your choices, I would select the second -- but neither one is very natural. I would just say, "Steve's exact birth date (or "date of birth") is unknown."
