singular trail and plural deer and plural animals? NEW CONCEPT ENGLISH 3.1

Wherever the puma went, it left behind it a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits.

I am a little bit confused about this sentence, why trail is singular and deer and animals are plural here?

Because there is only one trail and there is more than one deer and animals. The trail is the path that the puma (one puma) took.

The sentence you quoted is correct. However, note that you can also say: Wherever the puma went, it left behind (it) trails of dead deer and small animals like rabbits.
