Singular Possessives

In the examples below, I see both versions used in writing. Which do you personally prefer in each pair, 1 or 2?

1) the boss' desk
2) the boss's desk

1) the waitress' tips
2) the waitress's tips

1) the mattress' springs
2) the mattress's springs

1) Ross' friends
2) Ross's friends

1) Gus' income
2) Gus's income

I'd like to see some support for that claim. Canada is a big place.

In the rather smaller Britain, we write 's and pronounce it as an extra syllable. The only exception, for some people, is such classical names as Jesus and Socrates.
