singular or plural verb?

0I'm revising an article written in English by an Italian and I'm stuck on something he wrote: 02br

00The above assertion becomes more relevant at a higher frequency where 01font01i00generating and converting the signal is02i02font00 less energy efficient. 02br
02br
00'Is' or 'are'? 02br
02br
00I'm having a total black-out on this one, thanks. 02br

00If you think of "generating and converting" as a single process, use "is."02br
02br
00If you think of them as two seperate processes, use "are."0-

0I agree with GG. I'd expect there are two processes, one on each end of the line, so to speak. I expect you know more about the signal than I do.02br
02br
00I'd think of the signal as carrying some kind of information from point A to point B. At point A, the information is converted to a signal. At point B it's converted back to information, consuming energy at both ends.

0I was thinking along those lines, but in looking at it twice, I started to doubt myself.02br

00"a" is too specific, one would ask "WHICH higher frequency" and there wouldn't be any answer:-[ 0-

00He actually wrote "00The above assertion becomes more relevant at higher frequency" and specified nothing. 02br

00I simply took it as an error that article had been omitted. It's a very techy article and their English is rough. 02br

00Thanks. I may have other questions about tech
