Singular or Plural here

Hi, I want to paraphrase this:

When I asked for the time, both of them looked at their watches

As

When I asked for the time, both of them looked at their own watch/watches.

Should I write 'watch' as singular or plural in this sentence?

Thanks.

Since each person had one watch, the singular is OK. Since you were in a situation where there were two watches being looked at, the plural is OK. The meaning is the same.
