Singular or Plural?

When they start their first job/jobs, they feel insecure, not knowing what they are supposed to do.

I always have trouble deciding which to choose between job and jobs when pronouns are the plural form, as in the case above. Could you tell me whether there is a specific rule I should stick to or it's just a matter of personal preference?
