Singular or plural

I couldn't find the answer to this one in my books: is it "in the evening everybody puts on their coat" or should it have to be "their coats?"

This was once a tricky question for me too when I was a student, I asked a lot of teachers and they told me that it depends on what you want to represent, so both terms are grammatically correct I suppose.

We normally use the plural form in BrE. 'Their' is natural; 'his or her' is not.
