Singular or plural?

Hi
He defined chess Tactics as:
"situation that are based on the calculation of variation"Bearing in mind that Calculation is a variable noun and there is no 'the' after 'of', do I translate 'calculation as calculations?
What about 'variation'?

I would have said "the calculating of variations". If you translate it like that, you will be OK.

situations that are based on . . .

Personally, I wouldn't define tactics as situations, but I'm not the author of the book.
