Singular or Plural

The following two sentences I heard from my native english speaking friend.

1.) three types of car - don't use cars in this case
2.) three groups of people -- yes, the plural forms of person should be used.

I have no ideas why a plural form of cars can't be used here?
Any clue?

When kinds / types / groups of, etc. is followed by a countable noun, it must always be plural. You need cars.

Don't use 'cars'? I can't imagine why you got this advice. 'cars' is fine.
