Singular noun or plural noun?

which sentence is the correct one?I am at the Emperor's service or I am at the Emperor's services?Explain to me which one is correct and why that one is the correct answer .thank you very much

For the same reason we usually say 'water' and not 'waters', 'fruit' and not 'fruits', 'happiness' and not 'happinesses'.

Consider this example.



In a restaurant, the waiters perform many small services for the customers.

eg They fetch the menus quickly.They bring the food when it's hot. They pour the wine carefully. etc.



But when we speak generally, we don't say 'The services in that restaurant are good'.

We say 'The service

actually i really cannot understand Clive.First and foremost,what you mean when we speak generally?And how can i know when i can add 's' at the back or fowrd.Example,you say 'The service in that restaurant is good'.Why 's' is not added on the back of service.Can you give detail explanation or tell me what type of sentence/topic is that so that i can go and study.Thanks

Look for some grammar discussions about countable and uncountable nouns, and in particular read the part where they discuss nouns that can be both countable or uncountable depending on how you use them.
