Singluar or Plural..

Which of the following is correct:

Millions of tons of acid found in water have caused a grave ecological danger,

Or

Millions of tons of acid found in water has caused a grave ecological danger,

I would think that since 'acid' is uncountable noun, 'has' is better usage.

Thanks.

'Has' is better because the problem is basically the kind of substance, not the quantity, I think-- but the writer may be worried about the quantity instead; if so, use 'have'.
