Single-Verb Past participal Modifier

I was thinking of some alternative to some phrase in this :

"Campuses that used to admit almost every applicant are becoming more selective, and the students admitted are more academically prepared than a decade ago."

How is 'the students admitted' different from 'the admitted students'?

Top answer

I was not aware of a difference, but a web search turned up a lot of "admitted students" hits, so it looks as though that is the accepted term. It seems that when students are admitted, they become "admitted students". When do they become freshmen?
