Single 'quote' marks or double "speech" marks for direct speech?

Should my class use single 'quote' marks or "double" speech marks when writing direct speech?
I believe double to be American is this correct?
Please help as my colleagues and I are in dispute over this!

Double marks (") are correct in all style manuals in both AmE and BrE. Single marks (') are used for quotes within quotes and for setting off words and short phrases (not quotations) in text; they are also used informally (as I often do here at this forum) because they are quicker on the keyboard, but they are not acceptable in careful writing of quoted speech.
