Single quotation marks?

where are the single quotation marks used?

If you are citing a direct quote from a book, and inside that, there is another quotation, you would use single quotes. " is the direct quote, but since I already used double quotes to cite this quote, then the double quotes that surround kiss my **** becomes single quotes. There might be other uses, but that's the only one I know of.
